It's Remembrance Day today, as presumably most of you know. Actually, do you? Is this held in every country that fought in the World Wars or just the Commonwealth? Anyway, we had our two minutes of silence at 11am. Sort of. I was in charge of sorting this out and sent a company-wide e-mail yesterday, and a reminder today, about it. I said I would be ringing the bell that is usually used to announce new sales* to signify the beginning and end of the two minute period. Of course, half the company doesn't bother to read their e-mail properly, so when I rang the bell, some people automatically started clapping, assuming a new sale had been made. And then, when I rang it the second time after the two minutes, some
still hadn't cottoned on and applauded again, *rolls eyes*.
*The bell ringing thing is pretty stupid. Basically, whenever one of the sales team gets a new customer or renews a subscription, the bell is rung for them to announce their oh-so-great sales ability. Everyone in the office is meant to applaud. It's really cheesy and everyone who isn't on sales finds it insulting in a way - and I think the sales team find it a bit embarassing. The point of being in sales is to sell things, right? Why they're meant to get special recognition as well as the fact that they earn commission on it, is beyond me. It would be like applauding the studio team every time they finished coding a new web page or the finance department whenever they complete the monthly accounts. Or, as one guy put it, congratulating us on reception, every time we transfer a telephone call properly.
