Rumour Mill and Mathematics

I went out to dinner last night at a friend's. Because I was meeting him at seven 7 and I finish work at 5.30, there's not really enough time to go home and stopping in a cafe or bar would cost money. So, instead I stayed on late and surfed the net and worked on BDH some more (admittedly, that's mostly what I do all day at work anyway). The problem with having your desk in the reception area - as receptionists usually do - is that everyone walks by it and consequently everyone asked me why I was around late. Apparently saying you're going for dinner with an unspecified friend equals date.

Frankly, it's been so long since I've had anything remotely resembling a date, that I sincerely doubt I'd be coy about it in the seemingly unlikely event that I get one again. If they do happen, I envision a lot of singing.

It actually got quite late before I left for home and he did offer to let me crash at his but just the idea of turning up to work in the same clothes I'd worn the day before would cause more gossip than I could possibly handle.

When I did get home, I arrived to find my housemates puzzling over maths problems. I'm so glad I didn't miss that. The concerning thing is, that last statement was only half-sarcastic because I too got drawn into the "if you're crossing a bridge and you hear a train approaching when you're only three eighths of the way across..." malarkey.
